Biography
Who Am I?
My name is Muhammad Arif, often known as Urfi, and I’m a dedicated green journalist, filmmaker, human rights defender, and peace activist. Currently, I have the privilege of serving as a correspondent for Geo News, Pakistan’s most-watched television news channel, stationed in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan Administered Jammu and Kashmir.
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to engage in meaningful work, including being a common wealth fellow 2014 with Conciliation Resources in the UK. As a Co-director, I’ve collaborated on four joint venture Cross LoC films, one of which delves into the complexities of conflict, disasters, and climate change challenges affecting both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) in Indian and Pakistani Administered Jammu and Kashmir.
Beyond my journalism and filmmaking endeavors, I’ve joined forces with a group of like-minded green journalists to establish an inspiring community-based eco-tourism initiative known as “Seemari Valley.” This project draws inspiration from Ireland’s successful model of ex-combatants’ rehabilitation. Seemari Valley’s success story revolves around the transformation of 14 communities in the conflict-affected areas of District Muzaffarabad, Pakistan Administered Jammu and Kashmir.
As a journalist and human rights advocate, I have collaborated closely with civil rights activists in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) in recent past. During the civil rights movement, I have thoroughly examined the grievances of the local population and carefully considered the counterarguments presented by government institutions and power centers.
